Core feature guide
Receipt forwarding in Smart Receipts
Email receipts straight into the app. Forward a receipt email, or send a photo or PDF, to your private receipts address, and it is read like a scan and filed as an expense.
What it is
Your own receipts address
Every signed-in account gets one private address at in.smart-receipts.com. It never changes, so you can save it as a contact.
Read like a scan
Each receipt is read the same way as a scan in the app: merchant, date, amount, and category are filled in for you.
Filed as an expense
The receipt is saved with the new expense and synced to your devices. You get a notification that opens it.
Works with any mail app
Forward from Mail, Gmail, Outlook, or any other app, or set up automatic forwarding so receipts arrive on their own.
Find your address
- Sign in to Smart Receipts with Apple, Google, or email.
- Open Settings, then Account, then Email receipts.
- Tap Copy or Share next to Your receipts address.
- Save it as a contact, for example "Smart Receipts", so it is one tap away when you forward.
The same screen shows the accepted sender, your account's email, and a list of recent emails with what happened to each one.
Forward a receipt
- Open the receipt email in your mail app.
- Tap Forward and send it to your receipts address.
- A few moments later the expense appears in Smart Receipts and a notification opens it.

You can also email a photo of a paper receipt, or a PDF invoice, straight to the address. Send it from your account's email address.
Forward automatically from Gmail or Outlook
Gmail
- In Gmail on the web, open Settings, then Forwarding and POP/IMAP, and choose Add a forwarding address.
- Enter your receipts address. Gmail sends a confirmation code to it, and Smart Receipts passes that code on to your own email.
- Enter the code in Gmail to confirm.
- Create a filter, for example for mail from the shops you buy from or with "receipt" or "invoice" in the subject, and choose Forward it to your receipts address.
Outlook
- In Outlook, open Settings, then Mail, then Rules, and add a new rule.
- Set the condition, for example the sender or words in the subject.
- Choose Forward to and enter your receipts address, then save.
Tip: Forward only receipts, not all your mail. Every forwarded email counts toward the daily limit, and emails without a receipt are listed as "No receipt found in this message".
What gets filed
PDF invoices
PDF attachments up to 25 MB each.
Photos
JPEG and PNG images up to 5 MB each. Small images such as logos and signatures are skipped.
Receipts in the email itself
When there is no attachment, a receipt written in the email body, as most online shops send, is read and saved as a PDF of the email.
Up to five per email
Each email can carry up to five attachments. Attachments that read as receipts become separate expenses.
If a receipt cannot be read, it is still filed with the file attached, and you fill in the amount yourself. A receipt is never thrown away once it is known to be yours.
Recent emails and what they mean
- Filed: the receipts were saved as expenses.
- Already filed earlier: the same email was forwarded twice, so it was not filed again.
- Not filed: needs Pro: receipts by email are part of Pro.
- Not filed: daily limit reached: more than 50 emails arrived in one day.
- Not from an accepted sender or The sender could not be verified: the email did not come from your account's email address.
- No receipt found in this message: there was no receipt attachment and no receipt in the text.
Privacy and safety
- Only mail from your account's own email address is filed. Each email is checked to prove it really came from that address, so nobody else can add expenses to your account.
- Receipts are stored in your account like scanned receipts and sync to your devices.
- The original email is kept for 15 days so a failed read can be recovered, then deleted.
- Reading a receipt works like an in-app scan. See the Privacy & Security page for how scans are handled.
Good to know
Pro: the address works for every signed-in account, but receipts are filed only while the account has Pro. Mail that arrives without Pro is kept and shown as needing Pro.
Hide My Email: if you signed in with Apple and hid your email, add your real address under Settings, Account, Email. After you confirm it with a six-digit code, mail from that address is accepted.
One address per account: the address stays the same, so filters and contacts you set up keep working.
Questions
Do I need Pro to forward receipts?
Yes. Your receipts address works on any signed-in account, but receipts are filed only while the account has Pro. Mail that arrives without Pro is kept and listed as needing Pro.
Which email address can send to my receipts address?
Only your account's own email address: the one you signed in with, or the contact address you verified if you use Sign in with Apple with Hide My Email. Mail from anyone else is not filed.
What files can I send?
PDF files up to 25 MB and JPEG or PNG photos up to 5 MB, up to five attachments per email. A receipt written in the body of the email, as most online shops send, is read too and saved as a PDF.
Can I forward receipts automatically from Gmail or Outlook?
Yes. Add your receipts address as a forwarding address in Gmail or Outlook and use a filter or rule so only receipts are forwarded. Gmail's confirmation code is sent on to your own email so you can finish the setup.
