Categories in Smart Receipts

Group every expense by spending type with a name and an emoji. Categories drive the spend-by-category report, the PDF report column, and the category Siri Shortcuts.

What it is

Name and emoji

Each category has a name and an emoji so it is recognisable at a glance in lists and reports.

Assigned automatically

When you scan a receipt the AI suggests a category based on the merchant and items. You can change it before saving.

One per expense

Every expense belongs to a single category, which keeps reports clean and totals unambiguous.

Backed up

Categories are included in Dropbox and OneDrive backup and restored with your expenses.

Where it shows up

  • The Category field on every expense, filled in by AI after a scan or chosen manually.
  • Reports: the spend-by-category breakdown for any period.
  • PDF exports: the Category column on every line.
  • Siri Shortcuts: "Add expense to Food in Smart Receipts" and "How much did I spend on Food".

Good to know

Tip: Keep the list short and aligned with how you review spending. For tax returns, mirror the headings on the return. For expense claims, mirror your company policy.

When you delete it: Deleting a category does not delete its expenses. They lose the grouping and show without a category until you assign a new one.
