Tax rates in Smart Receipts
Define reusable tax rates such as VAT, GST, or sales tax as a name and a percentage, then attach one or more to an expense. The app shows the tax portion of the amount and includes tax totals in reports.
What it is
Name and percentage
A tax rate is just a name and a percentage greater than zero, for example "VAT 20%" or "GST 5%".
Several per expense
An expense can carry more than one tax rate. The form lists each one and shows the Total Tax.
Included in the amount
Taxes are treated as included in the expense amount. The app works out the tax portion from the percentage.
Tax Tracking toggle
Account Setup has a Tax Tracking switch. Turn it off and the tax fields disappear from the form and tax totals leave the reports.
How to set it up
- Open Settings, then Account Setup, and make sure Tax Tracking is on.
- Open Settings, then Taxes, and tap Add Tax.
- Enter a name and the percentage, then save.
- On an expense, open Taxes (Included In Amount), tap Add Taxes, and select the rates that apply.
Where it shows up
- The Taxes section on the expense form, with a running Total Tax.
- Tax totals in reports and exports when Tax Tracking is on.
- Scanned receipts: the AI reads the tax amount printed on the receipt as well.
Good to know
Tip: Freelancers and the self-employed should set up every rate they can reclaim before the first scan. A consistent tax record across the year is what makes the quarterly export usable.
When you delete it: Deleting a tax rate keeps the expenses but they lose that calculation, so the tax portion for those expenses will no longer be shown.
